Healthy fascia, healthy bodies

The health of fascia has a major impact on the healthy
functioning of all other systems in the body.

The transverse push and pull of the Bowen move stimulates the release of stuck and glued fibres in the fascia, allowing fluid transit routes to be reopened. The compression of the move stimulates the bioelectrical (piezoelectric) activity of tissue, encouraging rehydration. Nutrients like oxygen can be more efficiently delivered to the tissue, and cellular waste products also removed more effectively.

As fascia forms a continuous sheath throughout the body, each treatment addresses the whole body, not just the area of injury or pain. Postural misalignments are released, effective movement patterns are restored. Muscles pain, sprain and strain can heal more rapidly.

Fascia (connective tissue) plays a major role in the structure and maintenance of our posture. This continuous fluid filled sheath holds us upright like a watered flower stem. And collapses in the same way a flower stem wilts when not watered. Adhesions and gluing patterns in fascia cause inefficient and restricted movement and eventually pain and inflammation.

More than releasing muscles and rebalancing posture

Because we work on reopening one of the body’s major fluid pathways that deliver nutrients to tissue and removes waste products from the tissue, we are also working on the health of many systems of the body. Bowen has been shown to help with a large range of health issues such as skin problems, digestive problems and respiratory problems.

The meridian or energy system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture) runs through fascia. By releasing fascia with the Bowen moves, energetic pathways may be unblocked and rebalanced. Many of the chemicals that affect emotional responses travel through the fascia.

“The skin of the spirit.”

Our fascia has been called “the skin of the spirit”; the place of transformation; the medium through which the body and spirit communicate. There are three main rhythms in the body- the heartbeat, breathing and the regular expansion and contraction of the brain and spinal cord. This rhythym, the cranio-sacral movement, is subtle.  Its the first thing to arise in the developing foetus and the last thiing to leave the body at our death. The transmission of this third rhythym is through the fasciae of the body. Thus the bowen move may effect the expression of the deepest part of us to illicit change in old patterns and behaviour.

Bowen Therapy balances and stimulates energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. The parasympathetic or 'steady state' nervous system is evoked.  In this state the body self heals and continues given the right conditions.

With the release of waste products of cellular metabolism and old patterning, the Bowen moves begin to accomplish holistic balance almost immediately. Bowen Therapy addresses the body as a whole rather than just the presenting symptom, to embrace the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of each person receiving a treatment.

The Fascial Kinetics trained Bowen practitioner works as a catalyst or fascilitator, stimulating the body to heal itself.  The person presenting with a health problem is assessed and a treatment plan discussed. By combining sets of specific moves on specific loactions, the practitioner is able to address the body as a whole or target a specific presenting health issue.
